  Join Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council in celebrating young, emerging artists from across Sussex County. Established in 1969, Teen Arts showcases the creative achievements of students in grades 7 through 12 from county schools.

  A curated selection of Teen Arts artwork will be on view at SCAHC’s gallery following the Teen Arts Festival at Sussex County Community College. Meet the artists and experience some of the county’s outstanding student work at the reception on Saturday, March 21, from 2:00–4:00 PM.

  Dive into expressive painting through playful gestures, layered collage, gesso, and fluid acrylic pigments. In this workshop, you’ll explore loose spontaneous mark-making using markers and pencils. Collage elements will be added to build shapes, contrast, and texture. Gesso and fluid acrylics are added to create areas of negative space—highlighting the dynamic relationship between shape, value, and key design principles. The emphasis is on personal expression, while also learning about collage, water media tools and techniques. Paint what you feel—layer by layer.

  Open to artists of all levels, this workshop invites creative exploration without predetermined outcomes, planning, or drawing. Whether your work tends toward abstraction or representation, Ann will support you in developing your unique artistic voice. Bold strokes, dynamic compositions, and an openness to the unexpected are at the heart of this experience—allowing your art to evolve naturally and authentically.

  Materials will be provided. However, students are welcome to bring collage papers of their choice if desired.

  Pysanky Egg Class (Afternoon) 

  Come celebrate spring at SCAHC with this unique opportunity to learn a skill and folk tradition! Pysanky is an ancient folk art where you create beautiful designs on eggs layer by layer. Patterns are drawn on the egg with hot beeswax, which protects selected areas, and then dipped in colored dye. This process can be repeated with different colors to reveal an intricate pattern. In the final step, all the wax is melted away to reveal a beautiful design with vibrant colors!

  This workshop covers some of the history and traditions surrounding pysanky, a demonstration, and independent practice session. For some, this meditative communal art experience is the start of a spring-time family tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come.

  Anyone can create an original pysanka- no prerequisite skills required. All materials are provided and sustainable sourced, including ethically sourced eggs and beeswax. In-person attendance will be extremely limited. Please bring a container or old egg carton to take home your creation. For ages 18+.

  Entering juried art shows can feel intimidating — especially the electronic submission process. Join one of SCAHC’s staff members for a hands-on session that will guide you through the entire process of submitting your artwork to a juried exhibition.

  In this workshop, you’ll learn how to:

  • Photograph your artwork effectively
  • Organize and rename your image files
  • Resize photos to meet submission requirements
  • Attach and send your images via email

  We will also answer any questions you have and help you submit entries for our Skylands 38 Regional Juried Art Exhibition, which will soon be open for submissions.

  Take the stress out of entering juried shows — and gain the confidence to share your art with the world! 

  There is no cost to attend, but registration is required by Wednesday, March 18th.

  The beauty of acrylic paint pouring is in the spontaneity of the process! It’s impossible to predict how the fluid paint will interact, making the outcomes unique and surprising.

  This class will be learning different techniques to create beautiful artwork. Acrylic Pour requires no previous experience, and all skill levels are welcome. This class is for ages eight and up however, children must be accompanied by an adult. Acrylic paint will stain, and it is very messy, so please dress appropriately.

  Classes have sold out very quickly in the past, so get your spots while you still can!

  Learn the basics of Pen and Ink with this beginner course! You will learn about: hatching, cross hatching, loose lines, patterns to make shading a texture, stippling, and smudging.

  Students will have time to master each technique individually before learning how to combine each into a drawing of your choice! Choose from the instructor’s example to follow along, or find your own reference and put your skills to the test!

  All materials will be provided however the ink might stain so please dress appropriately.
